Knights of Rizal, Chapter Wilhelmsfeld-Heidelberg
About this Community
Since their founding in 1997, the “Knights of Rizal” of the Wilhelmsfeld-Heidelberg Chapter have been dedicated to keeping alive the intellectual legacy of the Filipino national hero Dr. José Rizal, who spent five months in Wilhelmsfeld and Heidelberg in 1886.
Wilhelmsfeld and Heidelberg hold special significance in this regard, as it was here in Wilhelmsfeld that José Rizal completed his heavily autobiographical novel *Noli me tangere* and wrote the poem “A las flores de Heidelberg.” He had profound and undoubtedly formative conversations with the landlord of his apartment, the local Protestant pastor Karl Ullmer, whose great-grandson, Dr. Fritz Hack-Ullmer, still maintains close ties to the Chapter today.
Through information for visitors, lectures, and commemorative ceremonies on Rizal’s birthday (June 19) and the anniversary of his death (December 30), the Chapter promotes the ideas of Rizal, who championed self-determination, freedom, education, democracy, patriotism, humanism, and social commitment.
In addition, the Chapter is involved in various social and humanitarian projects in the Philippines.
